HIKE RATINGS We
have completed some new hike ratings to give everybody a little better
understanding of what the hikes will be like. Each hike will show three
ratings - Duration/Grade/Trail. NEW HIKE RATINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS:Duration: Short - 3 hours or less walking time - usually weeknight or winter hikes, eg: Knox Average - up to 5 hours of walking including lunch, but not including travel time, eg: Black Mtn. Long - full day - might be a very long hike, or might be a long hike with a long travel time, getting home for dinner is questionable, likely 8 or more hours, eg: Commando Bay Grade: Minimal - slight grade changes - suitable for beginners eg: KVR railway or greenway Moderate - up and down grades - possibly steep up, but fairly short eg: Mt. Baldy Constant - strenuous, hearty workout, fairly steady uphill eg: McDougall Rim Steep - sections and/or rock scrambles where hands or poles are required eg: Pincushion Trail: Well defined - clearly marked, easy to follow eg: Knox or McDougall Rim Maze - many intersections eg: Crawford Intermittent - clearly marked sections with some unmarked sections eg: Mill Creek Park Off Trail - substantial walking done away from a clear trail eg: back half of Pincushion EXPLORATORY - a new trail or area, general area known, but the co-ordinator has not done the trail so anything should be expected. WEEKLY HIKES Knox Mountain Hikes: Every Monday at 6:00 pm - meet at the base of Knox Mountain (on the street, south of the tennis courts). This has no leader. REGULAR NOTICES Information: To obtain information on the hikes, etc. call the trip co-ordinator or Mike at 250-763-4420 Trip Planning Meeting: If you want to co-ordinate a trip or have trip ideas (even if you do not want to co-ordinate), plan to attend the trip planning meeting noted on the schedule, or call Mike or e-mail Devon at hikekelowna@gmail.com New Members: Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes early for carpooling and waiver completion. Always bring water. Remember lunch on weekend hikes. Wear hiking boots or high top runners and if possible bring hiking poles (can be old ski poles). You should go on a Knox Mountain Hike (Mondays) to introduce yourself to the club. Dogs: As some hikes are not very dog friendly, it is important to check with the co-ordinator if you are hoping to bring your dog. SCHEDULE: TIME: The time stated on the schedule is the departure time. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to that for carpooling. MEETING PLACES: Orchard Park Shopping Centre parking lot, SW corner of Springfield and Cooper unless otherwise stated. Alternate spots may be the old elementary school in Winfield or Cooper’s in Westbank. Check your schedule or with the co-ordinator. GRATUITY: As we are all painfully aware, the price of fuel has gone waaaay up. The amount of the gratuity to the driver will now be posted with each hike. Please be prepared to pay your driver at the end of the hike.
