The Central Okanagan Hiking Club is a non-profit organization
based in Kelowna, British Columbia. Our membership consists of men and women of
all ages and is steadily growing every year. We organize a variety of
hikes throughout the year, with each hike varying in difficulty so as to
accommodate all levels of physical fitness. Come the winter we continue hiking but switch, when the white stuff piles up too deep, to snowshoes or x-country skiing.
For a complete listing of
upcoming hikes please refer to the posted schedule.
If you have any suggestions or ideas for future hikes, please be sure and let us
know.
The Central Okanagan Hiking Club officially began June 5th, 1997
at the home of Richard Wittur with Richard, Brenda, Suzanne, Gordon, Loretta,
Murray, Helen. Faye and Shirley. The first hike was to Blue Grouse Mountain,
Saturday 7, 1997. A second hike followed the next day to McDougall Rim
In Richard's words, "forming a hiking club had never crossed
(his) mind and came about accidentally" but he also believed "recreation should
be affordable and free." After some community announcements in the local
newspapers, radio and TV station, the above members started this exciting club.
Richard led the club to September 2001 when Mike Motschko became
the new hike leader continuing where Richard left off. Mike provided the
enthusiasm and dedication for continued strong leadership, which inspired
this club onward to September 2004 when leadership was transferred to Pim
Meere. Since then a collection of people have given huge amounts of time and devotion to keeping the club going including Del Scovil, Nancy Baille, Paul Phillips, Devon Brooks and countless others.
